Women’s Baseball is played in a number of countries. The prominent and most pronounced baseball leagues are in the Taiwan, Japan, United States, Cuba and Canada. Most of these countries have the facility of good governing bodies, which support baseball programs for women and girls. Apart from these countries, Venezuela, Argentina, Dominican Republic and Korea are the other nations, which organize women’s baseball.
International Women’s League:
Women began competing for international competitions in the year 2001, when the women’s world series came to be held in the Toronto’s skydome. A series of world events were organized in the year 2002. These began with the initiation of Women’s world series events in 2002, followed by the games held on the Gold Coast in Australia and in the Uozu city of Japan. The world series of women initiated the way for an official International Baseball Federation, which sanctioned Women’s World Cup competitions. The year 2004, witnessed five countries competing for the 2004 World cup in Edmonton in Canada. These countries included Canada, the United States, Australia, Taiwan and Japan. Within a span of three years, the participation of women increased and in the year 2006, seven countries participated in the 2006 World Cup held in Taiwan. These countries included Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Cuba, Japan, United States and Canada. Recently, the name of the baseball cup was changed to Women’s World Championship from the Women’s World Cup. Thanks to the increase in number of countries participating in baseball championships, the International Baseball Federation has decided to organize Women’s World Champinoship on a binannual basis.
Inference:
Even now, women’s baseball is in a nascent stage and considering the fact that women’s baseball championships started some years ago, it can be safely assumed that it would take some more years to gain the interest of women in baseball games. For increased participation of women, enthusiastic girls interested in sports need to be motivated by their parents and thoroughly coached. This would help the girls competing in smaller league games to enhance their professional and gaming skills, which would help improve the overall quality in which the game is played.
